What is CONCERN EWS?

The CONCERN Early Warning System (EWS) has shown that nursing surveillance patterns are a valuable signal to predict and successfully prevent deterioration of hospitalized patients 2 days earlier than other EWS. CONCERN EWS is based on nursing surveillance patterns in acute care units and intensive care units.

A multisite, cluster randomized controlled trial showed that hospitalized patients whose care team were exposed to CONCERN EWS had a 35.6% decreased risk of mortality, 11.2% decreased LOS, 7.5% decreased risk of sepsis, and 24.9% increased risk of unanticipated ICU transfers compared with usual-care.

Our team developed a CONCERN Toolkit to support implementations at new health systems.

Current CONCERN EWS research is focused on expanding to additional sites, implementation science evaluations, and expansion of the predictive model to new patient populations, including inpatient pediatric setting and emergency department setting.
